Implicit Bias

Implicit biases are the unconscious prejudices and stereotypes that can manifest within institutions and individuals. Because we are all shaped by our own specific backgrounds, experiences, and belief systems, everyone has implicit bias. It is important to recognize and actively combat our implicit biases so that we can be successful volunteers in communities outside of our own.
The negative effects of implicit bias in schools have been investigated. In one study, English teachers perceived their classes to be too difficult for all non-white students which lowered students' expected years of schooling. In another study, black students were three times as likely to be suspended as white students.
